Learn Something New Every Day

Dad always said this was the secret to life…never stop learning. The benefits of learning something new each day far surpass the value of that one tip or trick you pick up, it improves your brain health, boosts your mood, and keeps you relevant and adaptable in a quickly changing world.

  • Brain and Cognitive Benefits

    • Boosts Neuroplasticity: Daily learning builds and strengthens neural pathways, helping your brain adapt and process information faster. Keep forming those new connections!

    • Grows Brain Matter: Practicing new concepts increases myelin density (white matter), which speeds up electrical signals between neurons. Yes, we can still do this as we age!

    • Builds Cognitive Reserve: Challenging your mind protects against cognitive decline and keeps memory sharp as you age. We have all known someone with dementia...and no one wants to end up that way. Keep learning new things to keep your brain working.

  • Mental and Emotional Benefits

    • Releases Dopamine: Novelty triggers dopamine, a chemical that elevates your mood, sparks excitement, and drives curiosity. Learning new things is a GOOD addiction to have!

    • Reduces Stress: Shifting your focus to a fresh topic breaks mundane routines and distracts you from daily worries. When you are overwhelmed, taking a 5 minute break to learn something new can completely change your day!

    • Increases Confidence: Mastering small facts or skills creates a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance. Bite sized learning can be the best way to tackle new technology. Figure one thing out today, learn something else tomorrow, and you won’t be overwhelmed.

  • Social and Lifelong Advantages

    • Improves Adaptability: Continuous learning promotes flexible thinking so you can handle unexpected life challenges. Can you pivot when necessary?

    • Enhances Conversation: Gaining daily tidbits makes you a more engaging conversationalist and helps you connect with others. Especially if its a positive topic.

    • Prevents Stagnation: Staying curious keeps your skills relevant and stops you from feeling stuck or outdated. Big one here for anyone over 50…you don’t need to know the latest slang or clothing trend, but being able to use the same apps as your kids & grandkids will surely enhance your life.

Back in the 70’s, Dad had a set of Compton’s Encyclopedias next to his chair in the dining room, and at dinner after he asked us what we learned that day, if you said “Nothing new,” he pulled out a volume and randomly opened it to teach us something. Fast forward to him being a 75 year old watching Jeopardy each night, and knowing (or being able to figure out) the right answers to nearly every single clue before the contestants do, and its proof of how valuable this one tip really is. He tried out twice, and they really wanted him on the show, but his thumb didn’t click the buzzer as fast as his brain found the answer.

While searching for information on another topic, I stumbled upon a great resource for business owners to “learn something new each day”. https://bit.ly/LearnBizTips This is a collaboration between the US Chamber of Commerce and AMEX, and has bite sized tips for small businesses.
